In the beginning no one know that in 1957
Frank and five others would be in a school fire.
That was when they became the Flat Rock Six.
Then some 50 years later Frank started Victim2Victor Burn Support Group. We are here today trying to carry his torch.
Frank Hensley
Frank shares that he was unconscious upon arrival at the hospital
and left alone in a room as he was not expected to live. He sat up on
the gurney and peered at himself in a mirror above the sink — instead
of seeing himself, “I saw a monster that had no hair, no ears, no
eyebrows and its face was like liquid. Horrified, I turned from the
mirror, and saw, standing at the foot of the gurney, Jesus” who told
him “Frankie, you’re going to be alright.” He was enveloped in a
“peace that passes all understanding”, he lay back down. And went to
sleep. (excerpt from Frank Hensley, Jr. My Story: The Short
Version as shared on Greenstreet Baptist website)
Frank drove the school bus in high school. Linda (his
future wife) was one of the passengers he picked up and
safely transported to school each day. She sat in the first seat behind
the driver so she could speak to Frank. They married in August
Frank and Linda had four children, Mitchell, Susan, Leigh Ann
and Vance, and host of grandchildren. Through the years, we’ve had
the privilege of meeting all of them at survivor events as they support
the work of their parents.
Frank first became involved in aftercare when he met Chaplain
Shirley Massey at UNC Jaycee Burn Center. He realized the need for
per support counselors for burn survivors and their loved ones. Both
Frank and Linda have given back to the burn community for many
years as SOAR peer supporters both at UNC and NC Baptist
Hospital.
Frank started his non-profit organization Victim2Victor, with the
“2” symbolizing COMMUNITY in healing and recovery. The group
has grown and now has ~200 subscribers. One of V2V’s activities is a
monthly Burn Support Group which started in 2005, with basically
Frank/Linda, Marsha and Tamela sitting in a circle in Action Health
at Hanes Mall. The group has had as many as 30 people in
attendance and is working on re-building attendance after Covid-19
with options for virtual meetings. Frank served as the Director of
V2V till the end of 2023.
Frank met his calling as a Baptist Minister and counselor —
his charismatic personality and welcoming nature instantly draws you
in. As he extends his hand and introduces himself, he often
says “I’m Frank Hens-lay. The way to remember that is hens
lay eggs, and I’m sure about it”.
